2011 Festival Canceled
After conferring with board and committee members and boat owners, we have canceled the 29th Annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival as a matter of SAFETY and prudence, in view of the imminence of Hurricane Irene. This is done with great regrets, but we cannot endanger the rare and special vessels that are the heart of the show.
We thank Brewers Hawthorne Cove Marina for all their support, and wish the marina and all its boats, safety over the weekend.
FUTURE: Think 2012-our major focus will be the preparations for a wonderful 30th Annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival!
An exciting location! The Festival has been in Boston, Quincy and, now, it's Salem, a picturesque city steeped in maritime lore on Boston's North Shore. Brewer Hawthorne Cove Marina is next to the House of Seven Gables and within walking distance of the Peabody Essex Museum and many other attractions. Call for Participants/Boats
Classic Boat Owners - join us for the Annual Antique and Classic Boat Festival! Judging is optional. The spirit of the Festival is to gather together the grand old craft and those who love them.
Entry Criteria:
- Antique boats: 1946 and before
- Classic Boats: 1975 and before
- Reproductions
Use our on-line Registration Form. Just download and fill out the form and send it along with your check to: Ann Campbell, 7 South St., Somerville, MA 02143.
For more information about boat registration and participation in the Festival, call Pat at (617) 666-8530. Boats may be sail, power, steam, hand-powered, built of wood, steel, ferrocement, or aluminum. Boats don't have to be in "show" condition to compete in judging.
The following are just some of the benefits of participating in the Festival:
Friendly and well-informed participants. Meet other proud owners and their boats. Compare notes. Discuss favorite varnishes, tools, and ports of call.
Diverse collection of beautiful boats. We expect more than forty boats built between 1894 and 1975, half sail and half power, with a few classic rowboats and canoes. Recent participants include DOROTHY, an 1898 fantail lake launch, TABBY, a 1946 catboat, SUMORIA, a 1929 custom motor yacht formerly owned by the mayor of Houston, GOLDENEYE, a 1960 Concordia yawl, CORSAIR, a vintage Elco cruiser, BREEZE, a 1946 Hinckley sloop, and JOHANNA, a Hacker-Craft runabout... to name but a few.
Nautical Exhibits and Crafts Market. These have included marine paintings, rare nautical books, historic photographs, ship models, and half-hulls.
Judging (optional) by exceptionally qualified judges. Awards are given for Best Sailboat, Best Powerboat, Best Hand-Powered Boat, Best Reproduction, Finest Interior, Best Restoration by Owner, Best in Original Condition, Spectators' Choice (to be chosen by general public), Special Citations (including Most Appropriately Dressed Crew and Best Workboat), and Edgar B. Caffrey Award for an exceptional contribution to the preservation of maritime heritage. Boats need not be in ""show condition." The spirit of the festival is to gather together the grand old craft and those who love them.
Friday night reception. It has been held aboard the reproduction 18th century schooner LARINDA, the LIGHTSHIP NANTUCKET, the historic (1805) Commandant's House at the Charlestown Navy Yard, and House of the Seven Gables in Salem.
Saturday night dinner and awards party. Relax with other participants, swap yarns and learn who won awards.
Sunday Blessing of the Fleet. This is followed by an amen response from the fleet - bells, whistles, horns, and cannon are in order!
Sunday Parade of Ships in Salem Harbor. The public watches the parade of historic vessels from Derby and Central Wharves.
Informal and inexpensive festival. While we encourage crews to wear costumes from the period of their boat, all our events are informal. There is time for boat hopping, socializing, seeing old friends and making new ones. Early registrants pay discounted registration fees.
Expand public appreciation of maritime heritage. Display your vessel to admiring spectators during public visiting hours. Help increase public awareness of our nation's maritime heritage. You are preserving a piece of it; take a bow!
Good media coverage. Soundings, Classic Boating, Offshore, Sailing, Waterway Times, Messing About in Boats and By-The-Sea.Com have featured the Festival. Local television stations cover the event. WCVB's award winning magazine program, Chronicle, profiled the festival in a show on summer delights. One year NECN featured it on coverage seen throughout New England.

- Preserves maritime heritage by encouraging boat owners to keep up the grand old craft;
- Inspires new owners to rescue and restore a vintage boat of their own;
- Is educational increasing public appreciation of the vessels of yesteryear. Individual placards are displayed on each vessel giving her specifications, history and fascinating anecdotal tidbits;
- Educates children about maritime history thereby creating stewards of this precious heritage
- Promotes boating. A number of the unconverted have been inspired to become boat owners and take to the water upon attending the Festival;
- Provides a platform for non-profit maritime associations to exhibit and tout their causes;
